Code of Conduct

THE SHEDIAC MASCARADE · 28 TO 30 MAY 2027

By purchasing a ticket to or entering the Shediac Mascarade, all guests agree to the following Code of Conduct.

In a room where nobody is quite who they say, the one thing that cannot be disguised is courtesy.

1. Admission and Removal

The Shediac Mascarade reserves the right to refuse entry to, or remove, any guest who does not comply with this Code of Conduct, without refund.

Tickets are non-transferable. The Shediac Mascarade does not process name changes, ticket swaps, or transfers. Guests who give their ticket to another person do so at their own risk.

The only authorized point of sale is through our website. The Shediac Mascarade cannot be held responsible for tickets purchased from a third party. You purchase from unauthorized sellers at your own risk.

Bracelets must remain on and intact at all times and may not be shared. A removed or damaged bracelet will not be replaced.

2. Conduct

All guests, performers, merchants, and volunteers are expected to treat one another with courtesy and respect. The period is a costume, not a licence.

A mask is not consent. Guests must ask before touching anyone or photographing them at close range. A refusal must be respected, immediately and gracefully.

Harassment, threats, intimidation, and discrimination of any kind are grounds for immediate removal from the festival grounds. The Shediac Mascarade will escalate incidents to law enforcement where appropriate.

Any guest exhibiting intoxicated or unsafe behaviour will be removed from the festival grounds by security.

To report a concern, speak to any member of our guild, any volunteer, or come to the blue tent beside the entrance.

3. Dress Code

Costumes and masks are not required but strongly encouraged. Dress from 1811 to 1865 if you can, modern clothes if you prefer, and a mask either way. A mask is the least one can do.

Clothing or accessories bearing vulgar, offensive, discriminatory, or politically inflammatory language or imagery are not permitted. Costumes that impersonate police, fire, paramedic, military, or security personnel are not permitted.

Guests who do not comply with the dress code will be asked to change or will be removed from the grounds without refund.

4. Props

Prop canes, walking sticks, fans, parasols, and non-functional flintlock or duelling props are welcome and must be peace-tied by our team at the entrance. No working firearms. No replica firearms. No blades of any kind, including sword canes that draw. No projectiles of any kind.

All props must be inspected before entry. Any prop used in a dangerous or threatening manner will be confiscated and the guest may be removed without refund. This applies to both adults and children.

Fencing and duelling steel belongs to hosts running demonstrations, under their own insurance, and never to guests.

5. Prohibited Items

The following items are not permitted on the festival grounds:

  • Outside food and beverages (exceptions: baby food, formula, breast milk, and food required for medical reasons)
  • Alcohol, cannabis, and illegal substances
  • Glass containers (exception: small baby food jars)
  • Pets (service animals are welcome with proper documentation; emotional support animals are not permitted)
  • Drones and remote-controlled devices
  • Bicycles, skateboards, kick scooters, rollerblades, and wheeled shoes (strollers, wagons, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters are welcome)
  • Suitcases and oversized bags
  • Open flame of any kind, including candles. The candlelight is ours to manage.
  • Any item deemed harmful, disruptive, or dangerous by festival staff

6. Bag Checks

All bags and items will be checked at the entrance to the festival grounds. Prohibited items must be returned to your vehicle. The Shediac Mascarade does not hold or store items. Unattended bags or items may be removed from the grounds.

7. Alcohol

The entire Neptune Drive-In grounds are covered under the festival’s liquor licence. Alcoholic beverages are served to guests aged 19 and over who are wearing a 19+ bracelet. The Shediac Mascarade reserves the right to refuse service to any guest.

8. Smoking and Vaping

Smoking, vaping, and the consumption of cannabis are not permitted anywhere on the festival grounds.

9. Weather and Closures

The Shediac Mascarade is a rain-or-shine event. The Shediac Mascarade reserves the right to pause programming, close part or all of the grounds in the event of extreme or dangerous weather conditions. Pauses and closures are not refunded. If the entire festival is cancelled before opening day, ticket prices will be refunded.

10. Photography and Filming

The Shediac Mascarade is a photographed and filmed event. By attending, you consent to appearing in photos and videos used to promote our festivals on our website and social media. A mask is not a release, and we do not treat it as one. If you would prefer not to be photographed, please let our photographers know. If you see a photo posted on our social media and would like it removed, please contact us at mascarade@shediacwonderland.ca.

Personal photos and videos are welcome. Commercial filming or professional photography requires written permission from the Shediac Mascarade.

11. Assumption of Risk

The Shediac Mascarade includes dancing, lawn games, demonstrations with steel in trained hands, candlelight, fire effects, loud music, and uneven outdoor ground. Guests attend at their own risk. All guests must stay behind barriers and follow the directions of hosts and guild members at all times.

12. First Aid

First aid services are available on the festival grounds. For medical assistance, speak to any member of our guild or volunteer. Emergency medical services are present during festival hours. The first aid station is located beside the entrance.

13. Lost and Found

Lost items are held for 30 days after the festival. During the festival, speak to any guild member or volunteer, or visit the blue tent beside the entrance. After the festival, contact mascarade@shediacwonderland.ca.
