The Shediac Mascarade

A masquerade in nineteenth-century Shediac. Dress for 1811, or 1865, or anywhere in between.

❦

A three-day costumed festival in Shediac, New Brunswick, set between 1811 and 1865. Over one weekend: a masked ball with live period music, a murder mystery, a grand promenade, an artisan market, parlour games, dance lessons, and a Friday-night beach party at Parlee Beach. You pick a character, you pick an era, and you walk in as someone else.

What awaits

The Masked Ball

Saturday evening, after dark. Live period music, dancing, and the highlight of the weekend.

A murder mystery

A mystery woven through the weekend, for adults (19+). Somebody at this assembly is not who they claim to be.

The Grand Promenade

Costumes judged, bows exchanged, and a great deal of looking at one another while pretending not to.

Dance lessons and parlour entertainment

Learn a period dance, try a parlour game, and join demonstrations led by our hosts.

The artisan market

Handmade goods, masks, chocolate, perfume, and more. Small things, finely made.

The Sand Follies

Our Friday evening social at Parlee Beach, included with every ticket. Food, drink, music, and a sunset.

A mask doesn't cover a face. It puts a second one on top, and both of them show.

One night on this shore, a room full of people found out that a sentence can do the same thing, and nobody in it has been a simple person since.

Every May we throw that night again and ask you who you are.

The only wrong answer is your real name.

At the gate

Someone will ask you who you are.

Answer however you like. A title, a trade, a rumour, or a riddle will all do nicely. The only wrong answer is your real name.

Period dress is encouraged, and quietly rewarded. A mask is the least one can do.
